D.J. Mbenga Signs With New Orleans Hornets

It was announced yesterday that the Hornets have officialled signed free-agent forward D.J. Mbenga to the teams roster. Mbenga, a native from Congo, has played several years in the NBA as a journeyman looking for mostly scrap minutes. His time with the Lakers is where he’s known best, as he dominantes in garbage time. It’s most likely that D.J signed with the Hornets for a bigger, more expanded role.

Mbenga holds career averages of 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in 193 games (four starts). He has spent time playing with the Mavericks (2004-07), Warriors (2007-08) and the Lakers (2008-10), as well as being a member of the Belgian national team.

To me this move signifies that Jason Smith will move to the backup forward position behind West and that will most likely lead to Pops getting cut. Then behind Okafor we have Gray and Mbenga battling it out for the backup center position.

Pretty bland move, nothing to get excited about. But Mbenga will be able to flash his rings around in front of Chris Paul which might make him jealous.
