Well folks it’s officially David Stern and his merry band of men now own our New Orleans Hornets. To say I’m on the edge would be an understatement because I as many others know that Stern cannot be trusted particularly when a team is in his direct controls. If you were to give me a split on the chances of the team staying in New Orleans I think it’s about 40/60 (Stay/Leave). But I think the attendance benchmarks are more important than ever right now in terms of their viability in the region.
Now the “commish” has said he wants to keep the team in the region but we cannot for a split second trust his words. We all saw what he did to Seattle not once did he support the team while they were having ownership concerns, he supported the incoming owner and his motives and agenda’s (to move the team to Oklahoma). It’s quite simple really if a rich businessman comes in says he wants to move the team and has the funds to do it then Stern will do everything in his power to move the team.
Let’s head over the jump for more despair…
The very first thing that should be on newly appointed chairman Jac Sperling’s list should be to find an owner in the Louisiana region. A guy (or girl) that has 300 million dollars in cash assets just lying around. I’m not going to hold my breath so I’ll need some of you guys within New Orleans to go door knocking in the rich parts to ask if people are interested in buying the team.
To be honest though if Gary Chouest (probably the richest dude within New Orleans) isn’t willing to buy the team then I don’t know who is. So forgive my pessimism but it appears that the team may be taking its first step to leavin New Orleans. I can only hope I’m wrong.
Next thing on the plate is if the team moves does the Hornets brand cease to exist?
I can only hope not because a big reason as to why I began following this tema was their Hornets brand. The mesh of colours, the pinsriped jerseys, the logo’s everything. I know it sounds trivial but I took a certain pride in them because they were all slightly different to most professional teams.
So as the NBA purchases the franchise don’t be surprised if the next thing you hear is that there are outsiders wanting in on the team and that the team is going to move. Oh and that this blog will cease to exist…Yea I know, sad…
