The “What If?” series will feature several posts on if events were to be different all those years ago.
Well he’d probably be running around trying to escape a deer hunter somewhere in the Wisconsin region, but that story for another time. In the 2005 draft it was widely speculated that Andrew Bogut, a center from my country Australia, would be the number one overall pick. No doubt there was other talent out there, but to pick up a skilled, physical center is something that rarely comes around.
But, what if, Chris Paul was taken as the number one overall pick. How would things look on paper?
I need to remind those of you reading this that this is all speculation and reflection. By no means can we quantitative analyse how CP would have done as a Buck. There are just too many variables to work with and sometimes scenarios work themselves out.
But let’s take a look at what might have been…
Well let’s take a gander at what the starting lineup would have been.
PG: Chris Paul
SG: Michael Redd
SF: Bobbie Simmons
PF: Joe Smith
C: Jamaal Magloire
Back when Michael Redd was in his “Hey” days it would have been an awesome back-court with a balanced scoring attack. But the rest of the team looks rather disastrous. Joe Smith was not a capable starting power-forward at the time and Magloire and Simmons were on the back end of their careers. You’d have to say though this team would make the playoffs at that time. The Eastern conference sucked and this would have been a better roster than the Hornets 2005-06 one.
Moving forward it’s most likely the Bucks would’ve sought some front court help, they didn’t have much in the way of trade chips, so it’s more than likely that Paul would wallow through years of poor team play never even scratching the surface on his potential. It’s also more than likely he wouldn’t sign his contract extension (like he did with the Hornets) and perhaps he would’ve moved elsewhere as a free-agent.
As it stands right now the Bucks have a point guard in Brandon Jennings and I think the way things played out were for the best. The Bucks got their big-man and are in a position to challenge in the playoffs. The Hornets got Chris Paul and have had ups and downs, but but are no doubt satisfied with their selection. Still, you have to wonder if Bucks fans would re-do things and take Chris Paul over Andrew Bogut. If the Bucks picked Paul, they’d almost simultaneously have to look for a big-man. There would be no David West/CP Pick-and-fade, no CCC, no Trey-ja three-pointers off the fast break.
It would be a very different story indeed.
