It appears that the Golden State Warriors have targeted New Orleans Assistant Coach Mike Malone for their head coach vacancy. This comes as sour news to Hornets fans because Malone was very important in turning around the identity of the ball-club. However it doesn’t come as a complete surprise. Malone is gaining a reputation as a defensive mastermind helping out in Cleveland and moving things down to New Orleans.
If he were to consider such a job with Golden State he would have a lot of work to do. The Warriors over the recent past, have been god awful defensively. They push the tempo and know how to fill the basket.
Malone is entrenched in the Van Gundy coaching tree, which prides itself on defense. Monty Williams, the Hornets head coach, comes from such a tree.
The Warriors have their eye on several other candidates which include Mike Brown, Brian Shaw (the Lakers assistant) and Celtics assistant Lawrence Frank. Though, if the Warriors decided on Malone they’d likely have to bring in some players more known for the defense.
Either way, this isn’t a great start for the Hornets organisation this offseason, even if it reflects well on the strength of their coaching staff.
UPDATE: Malone is also on the Houston Rockets radar for their Head-Coach vacancy. While this was reported in late April it goes to show that his services are highly valued.
