There has been many speculations that NBA Commissioner David Stern made sure the New Orleans Hornets were somehow guaranteed to win the lottery wednesday night. Even though Tom Benson has purchased the Hornets the team still is technically owned by the NBA and Stern until a future date.
David Stern had been trying to sell the Hornets and get maximum value out of it. Some say that Stern promised the new owners the #1 pick in the draft as apart of the deal. According to HOOPSWORLD, the NBA required the new owners of the Hornets to be in attendance of the NBA Draft Lottery. It does seem like the NBA already knew who the winner was before the show started.
Even so I do not believe that the Hornets were fixed to win. It would be bad for the game of basketball as a whole if this kind of thing were to happen in the NBA. There is really no need or reason for it besides shellfish attempts by David Stern to make more money.
The Hornets have caught a lot of bad breaks this past year. They lost their star franchise player in Chris Paul and went from a playoff team to tied for the 3rd worst record in the league. The Hornets suffered many injuries and setback throughout the year but yet the team still always played hard. The Hornets deserved to win the lottery just as much as anybody else.
I doubt David Stern will even respond to all this non-sense about him rigging the Lottery. I think a lot of people are forgetting that this was a lottery. The Bobcats only had a 25% chance at winning it, thats better than a 13.7% chance but still does not guarantee anything. If the Bulls can win it with a 1.7% chance why can’t the Hornets with a 13.7% chance? At the end of the day the Hornets will still have the #1 pick and Anthony Davis.
Do you think the Hornets were fixed to win the #1 pick?
