USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo announced that Monty Williams, head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, will join the USA Men’s Basketball program as an assistant coach. Along with Chicago Bull’s head coach Tom Thibodeau, Williams plans to work under head coach Mike Kryzewski in preparation for the 2016 Olympics.
Williams began his coaching career as an assistant to Nate McMIllan for the Portland Trailblazers Eight years later, Williams is replacing McMillan, who will, along with Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni, not be retained as a member of the Olympic team staff. Williams, like McMillan before him, is generally considered to be a defense-focused coach, as is Thibodeau.
Ryan Anderson and Anthony Davis are both expected to be involved with the USA Men’s Basketball program this off-season. Eric Gordon was named a finalist for the 2012 Olympic team and was a member of the 2010 Gold Medal winning World Championships team.
Already a chance for Anderson and Davis to develop, offseason involvement with USA Basketball represents an opportunity for Williams to expand on his coaching abilities and to develop potentially beneficial connections with players and executives around the league.
