According to a report from WDSU TV’s Fletcher Mackel, the New Orleans Pelicans are interested in acquiring forward Shawn Marion and the 13th pick from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for a future pick. The Mavericks reportedly been seeking to move Shawn Marion and his $9,066,796 contract to free sufficient cap space to offer a max contract. The Mavericks would be able to free the required cap space by simply trading away the 13th overall pick and its associated cap hold, but instead appear to be looking to move Marion with the 13th pick as an incentive.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are also reportedly interested in the 13th pick and Shawn Marion package, and could offer the 19th pick or the 31st and 33rd.
According to the same report from Fletcher Mackel, the Pelicans are interested in acquiring the 13th pick to draft Greek forward Giannis Adetokunbo. Here is the draft express profile page for Adetokunbo.
While Adetokunbo is an interesting asset, acquiring Marion would mean forfeiting significant cap space and flexibility. With Marion’s contracts, the Pelicans would drop from around 12 million in offseason cap room to only around 3 million and the mid-level exception, worth about 5 million.
