Pelicans Trade For Jrue Holiday

The New Orleans Pelicans traded Kentucky center Nerlens Noel, who surprisingly fell to the sixth pick, to the Philadelphia 76ers for point guard Jrue Holiday.  The Pelicans also sent a top-5 protected 2014 first round pick to the 76ers, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.

Holiday, only 23 years old, was an all-star last season for the 76ers.  I believe that this trade signifies that Philadelphia did not like the long-term potential of their roster, and chose to rebuild.  Thus, I would expect Evan Turner and potentially Thad Y0ung to be traded, and would not expect free agent Andrew Bynum to re-sign.

The Pelicans added a piece of established value with the potential to improve and surrendered two assets whose value was based solely on projection.  Personally, I think Nerlens Noel will become a very good player, and the 2014 draft is expected to be filled with high level talent.  It seems clear that the Pelicans are committed to making a playoff push in this coming season.  It will be interesting to see how they round out the rest of the roster.
