On Thursday evening, NBA TV broadcasted the USA Basketball program’s intra-squad scrimmage. Surrounded by young stars, Anthony Davis stood out, scoring 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and pulling down 7 rebounds. Davis showed increased range on his jump-shot and a willingness to attack off the dribble not seen last season. Though Davis did struggle with DeAndre Jordan’s bulk down low, he displayed valuable defensive versatility, cutting off driving lanes, switching onto guards, and defending big men.
The other Pelicans, Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson, had mixed success. Holiday scored 12 points on 13 field goal attempts, but grabbed 7 rebounds and recorded 5 assists. Holiday was a disruptive half-court defender, pressuring opposing guards into turnovers that spurred the White team’s game-breaking run. Ryan Anderson scored 9 points on 3-of-4 shooting, but was only given 9 minutes of playing time.
