Pelicans Trying to Trade Into First Round

According to a tweet from Yahoo!’s Marc Spears the Pelicans are not going to be sitting around quietly as the draft approaches and instead may be making a move to acquire a first round pick this season in hopes of filling one of their roster holes.

The Pelicans of course are down a first round pick this season thanks to the Jrue Holiday trade on draft day last year but the move makes sense if the team can get into the late first round range as there are a group of small forwards that absolutely should be available anywhere from pick 15-30 that could really help the team next season. Some of those names include Duke’s Rodney Hood, N.C. State’s TJ Warren, Kentucky’s James Young, Clemson’s K.J. McDaniel’s and Wichita State’s Cleanthony Early, though there are even more that could be available. There are less centers that would around and worth a first round pick, and even less that would be ready to play next season, but the idea of Clint Capela in New Orleans going forward is interesting.

Unfortunately for the Pelicans finding a partner to actually make a move on is really tough. The Pheonix Suns have three first round draft picks and a pretty full roster meaning they may be willing to move on in exchange for a future pick if the Pelicans have that burning of a desire to trade into this draft. The Chicago Bulls also own two first round picks and will probably be looking to continue and compete for a playoff spot next season so they may be willing to move one for someone they think could help them more than a rookie which could put Pierre Jackson out as a possibility. The Miami Heat may also be a possibility if Mario Chalmers leaves, putting them in the market for a point guard and making Jackson and his inexpensive contract appealing.

Either way things just got a lot more interesting for the Pelicans as they continue to try to improve the team going forward. Make sure to stay tuned to Pelican Debrief for more news and reactions as we get closer to draft day.
