After reports yesterday that Luke Babbitt wasn’t at the New Orleans Pelicans summer league practice news came out today that Babbitt would in fact no be a member of the team when they head to Las Vegas in the coming days despite being on the roster.
Although Luke Babbitt is on #Pelicans SL roster, the team doesn’t expect to have him with squad in Vegas.

While there isn’t any official explanation about why Babbitt won’t be in Vegas with the Pelicans this seems to be a when there is smoke there is fire situation considering that Babbitt has a non-guaranteed contract for next season and the Pelicans need to clear cap space to make an Omer Asik trade work and the trade can’t become official until tomorrow, though it seems likely to happen after that.
Babbitt was expected to be one of the leaders of the Pelicans summer league team and perhaps their best scorer thanks to his perimeter shooting and lack of real scoring options outside of Babbitt, Josh Howard and Russ Smith. The team also expects to have Jeff Withey around for Vegas which points to him sticking around with all the moves and probably being the backup center for next year’s Pelicans.
Obviously none of this is guaranteed but at the very least these circumstances seem to be pointing in the direction of Dell Demps having a move up his sleeve to make things work with the Asik trade and Babbitt is seemingly part of it.
