League source says small forward Omri Casspi ”most likely” will be waived by Pelicans once NBA approves three-team trade.

The move makes sense when looking at the Pelicans Las Vegas Summer league roster which includes a group of small forwards that they handpicked to bring in, which Reid also touched on.
Still think the Pelicans are looking closely at one of their summer league small forwards to emerge for a roster spot. — John Reid (@JohnReid64) July 14, 2014
Casspi would have been a nice fit for New Orleans if they had to move Luke Babbitt as part of the Asik trade but once the Pelicans were able to land Scotty Hopson and his contract to make things work there wasn’t really a need. Casspi fits best as a stretch four where he brings elite three-point shooting from the corners but he doesn’t do much else. Casspi was a small forward at the start of his NBA career but a lack of athleticism caused him to bounce around the league a bit before landing with Houston last year.
As for the small forward spot things seem likely to come down to a bargain deal and one of the summer league guys as the rest of the roster seems fairly set. DeQuan Jones had a nice afternoon yesterday and Josh Howard played well in the team’s first game in Vegas so no one seems to have a leg up yet. Now that the Asik trade is completed the small forward spot is the one remaining piece of the puzzle for the Pelicans.
