The New Orleans Pelicans entered Wednesday night’s game with the Oklahoma City Thunder with a chance to do some real damage to OKC’s playoff hopes. The Thunder entered the game without Kevin Durant and trailing the Pelicans 2-0 in the season series and by two games in the standings.

But Russell Westbrook had a dominant night with 45 points, six rebounds and six assists to carry his team to a much-needed victory and leave the Pelicans with a disappointing loss at home.

Other observations:

  • Sometimes great players just have great nights. We see it often with AD when it seems impossible for other teams to guard him. Jrue Holiday would have helped tonight but it also may not have mattered. Russell Westbrook is one of the best 10 players in the NBA. There are just going to be games he wins by himself and tonight was one. It happens.
  • It probably wouldn’t have solved everything but nights like tonight are the frustrating ones for the Pelicans fourth quarter offense. No one was having any success with their drives or jumpers and yet Anthony Davis only touched the ball a few times in positions he could do damage. That shouldn’t happen.
  • The loss is tough but the Pelicans can still win that important season series with a win over Oklahoma City on Friday. It will be tougher but it can be done. Time to bounce back. And make shots.
