The New Orleans Pelicans couldn’t extend their season-long five game winning streak in Dallas, falling to the Mavericks 102-93. After starting the first half scoring 58 points, the Pelicans offense fell apart in the second half, only scoring 39 points in the final 24 minutes. The Pelicans were playing the second game of a road back-to-back after defeating the Denver Nuggets Sunday.

Norris Cole put up 19 points to lead the Pelicans in scoring, while Alexis Ajinca put up a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Monta Ellis was the leading scorer for the Mavericks with 20 points.

Other Observations:

  • One of the biggest disappointments in this game for New Orleans was the passiveness to attack the basket. The Pelicans only managed 24 points in the paint against a team who started Dirk Nowitzki and Bernard James as their bigs. That’s a duo a team like New Orleans could have put up a huge number against, instead electing to shoot long balls most of the night.
  • The first half and second half were two different stories as far as long-range shooting goes. In the first half, the Pelicans went 8-16 from behind the three-point line. New Orleans only made two out of their five attempts from behind the arc in the second half. A tale of two halves for New Orleans.
  • While the balance of scoring continues to be a positive for the Pelicans as five Pelicans put up over 10 points on the night, only two of those players shot over .500% from the field. Both of those players (Norris Cole and Alexis Ajinca) are on the bench unit. The lack of consistency from the starting unit could be a big problem with Anthony Davis probably a few games or more from returning.
  • The Pelicans biggest stretch of the season is coming up with their three-game home stand coming up. The Pelicans trail the Oklahoma City Thunder by one game and hold the tiebreaker if the teams end up with the same record. Oklahoma City is missing their two biggest stars, however their schedule coming up is against some of the weaker teams in the NBA. The Pelicans will need to keep up their winning ways and stay close with the Thunder if they want to be within striking distance when AD, Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson return.
  • The New Orleans Pelicans will look to begin a new win streak Wednesday as they take on the Detroit Pistons at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM CST.

Even in a tough loss, there is one positive to take out of this game…
