New Orleans Pelicans suffer disappointing loss to Boston Celtics

Friday night was supposed to be simple. The New Orleans Pelicans were going to consistently get to the rim and take advantage of the Boston Celtics lack of rim protection and score easy buckets on their way to a big win. Then something weird happened.

Outside of Anthony Davis no other Pelican could score. Then Davis couldn’t score and ultimately the Celtics completed a season sweep of the Pelicans which kept New Orleans behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. It was frustrating and ugly and a game the Pelicans will probably regret in the long run.

Not sure what else the Pelicans could have asked for from Anthony Davis who finished with 29 points on 21 shots to go along with 14 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal. It was a great night and ultimately he was let down by his teammates.  . PF/C. New Orleans Pelicans. ANTHONY DAVIS. A

Other observations:

  • Make no mistakes about it; that was a bad loss. The Pelicans can afford losses to other really good teams or on the second night of back-to-backs but not ones to bad teams. It just really hurts in a playoff run to be swept by the Celtics.
  • The other tough part about tonight was minutes. With a game against the hard hitting Grizzlies tomorrow Anthony Davis played 42 minutes, Tyreke Evans 37 and Eric Gordon 36. That seems tough for the three with a now even more important game tomorrow. Fatigue will be an issue and if New Orleans falls Monty Williams may regret not going to the bench guys more tonight.
  • That said five man bench units probably need to stop until Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson return. It is just really hard for an offense to rely on Alexis Ajicna to carry them for five and eight minute stretches at a time and tonight the Pelicans first big drought came because of it.
