2015 NBA Mock Draft: Second round

facebooktwitterreddit

While the first round of the NBA Draft has the big names and major contributors to the NBA level right out of the gate, the second round is where the diamonds in the rough are found. The New Orleans Pelicans will be one of the teams trying to find their own steals after the initial 30 players in the draft. Pelican Debrief’s 2015 NBA mock draft, for the second round, will show some of these players that could pan out to be NBA caliber going forward.

Serbia. Nikola Milutinov. 31. player. 86. The Minnesota Timberwolves are more than likely looking for a draft-and-stash player if they do end up keeping this pick. A foreign big with high potential like Nikola Milutinov could mirror the same kind of success Minnesota had with current power center Nikola Pekovic. . Positioned

Stanford. Anthony Brown. 32. player. 169. The Houston Rockets are doing pretty well at all positions, but after picking Tyus Jones, the biggest long term question-marks are probably at SF. Picking a player with the long-range stroke and defensive capabilities of Anthony Brown could pay off long term for the Rockets.. SF

Texas. Jonathan Holmes. 33. player. 18. There’s a good chance the Boston Celtics could move this pick in the upcoming draft. When that’s the case, you want to take a guy who could’ve gone higher in the draft with high upside. Jonathan Holmes has the talent and skill level to be a solid role-player early at the NBA level for whatever team wants him.. SF/PF

20. The Los Angeles Lakers still need some help at PG depending on the future of Jeremy Lin. A young, quick and aggressive point guard in Terry Rozier could speed up the pace off the bench for a Lakers team looking to keep up with the speed of the Western Conference’s best. . PG. Louisville. Terry Rozier. 34. player

Michael Qualls. 35. player. 93. At the end of the day, the Philadelphia 76ers need more talent. Even after a major ACL injury, Michael Qualls can over time bring a major upgrade to what has been a weak SG position for the Sixers over the past few seasons.. SG. Arkansas

TRADE!<p class=. C. Kentucky. Dakari Johnson. 36. player. 86

37. player. 93. The Philadelphia 76ers continue their stronghold of second round selections with another player who dropped a large amount due to fit on an NBA team. Christian Wood could help be a bench big who could space the floor an effective amount, and could be a key role player if he improves his decision making.. PF. UNLV. Christian Wood

The Detroit Pistons will be looking for someone to fill the hole at PF when Greg Monroe more than likely leaves Detroit in free agency. A big bruiser who specializes on the boards like Jordan Mickey would be a great fit for a team looking to rebuild from a bad combination of players inside the past few seasons. . PF/C. LSU. Jordan Mickey. 38. player. 64

Andrew Harrison. 39. player. 170. With the move to draft Dakari Johnson, the Charlotte Hornets could very well step up to improve team chemistry going forward. Pairing Dakari with a guy like Andrew Harrison to bolster scoring off the bench, an issue for Charlotte last year, could be a major step in the right direction for the Hornets. . PG. Kentucky

40. player. 110. The is the perfect territory for the Miami Heat to go for a draft-and-stash option for the long term future. With Hassan Whiteside surprising everyone in the paint, stashing a guy like Arturas Gudaitis away to see if he develops into a solid NBA-type player could be a smart play depending on the success of Miami’s bigs going forward in the long-term future. . C. Lithuania. Arturas Gudaitis

Washington. Robert Upshaw. 41. player. 147. The Brooklyn Nets will be trying to find talent they can use in the front court if they decide to move on from Brook Lopez. A guy like Robert Upshaw could be a player with the kind of upside on the glass and defensively in the paint to help the Nets establish a tougher interior down the road. . C

118. Pick traded to DEN
With the uncertain future of the stars of the Denver Nuggets, flexibility is a huge plus in any play being looked at. A guy like Cedi Osman, who has been shown to play all three backcourt positions would be a good project for the Nuggets to take a chance on with a lot of change and movement on the horizon in Denver.
. SF/SG/PG. Macedonia. Cedi Osman. 42. player

100. One of the biggest areas of concern for the Indiana Pacers is outside shooting. With a guy like Michael Frazier, the Pacers could have another weapon to plug in off the bench and add another element to a strong Indiana team.. SG. Florida. Michael Frazier. 43. player

player. 66. The Phoenix Suns have a tough decision to make at the PG position with recent rumors about Eric Bledsoe. Getting a young, developing guard in Olivier Hanlan with quickness and flexibility could be the right fit to go with whatever the Suns decide to do with Bledsoe and the other guards on the team. . PG/SG. Boston. Olivier Hanlan. 44

45. player. 18. The Boston Celtics have shown a pretty good model for getting athletic wings on their team with ease. Adding another guy with those traits like J.P. Tokoto could be a great addition late in the draft if the Celtics decide to become active with their saved assets in free agency.. SG. North Carolina. J.P. Tokoto

Mouhammadou . 46. player. 89. A draft-and-stash project could very likely be in the future for the Milwaukee Bucks. With the center position still yet to be filled, a guy to keep overseas for a few years like Mouhammadou Jaiteh would be a smart gamble for the Bucks longer term in case their short-term plans fail to live up to expectations. . C. France

SF. Spain. Daniel Diaz. 47. player. 93. The Philadelphia 76ers really like draft-and-stash players at this point in the draft. A spot-up shooter player like Daniel Diaz could be worth the 12-24 months of waiting and watching to see if he could pan out to a NBA-ready role player a few years into the future.

149. TRADE!
OKC trades pick #48 to the Boston Celtics for a 2016 2nd rounder and cash considerations

For the Oklahoma City Thunder, it helps shore up room to re-sign Enes Kanter in the long haul and help keep the core of their roster together. For the Boston Celtics, it gives them an opportunity to snag an offensively polished big man who could drop in this draft and give him the chance to flourish on an underwhelming frontcourt in Boston.
. C. Syracuse. Rakeem Christmas. 48. player

142. The Washington Wizards are looking to add some depth to what was a weak backup SG position last season. Adding an athletic SG who can slash to the basket like Norman Powell would be beneficial to the team and the health of Bradley Beal going forward. . SG. UCLA. Norman Powell. 49. player

125. The Atlanta Hawks have a pretty good roster at the moment. Taking a shot at a guy like Shawn Dawson, who has blossomed since his move from the states to Israeli basketball and can easily make the transition to the NBA, might be a worthwhile idea for the Hawks to contemplate.. SG/SF. Israel. Shawn Dawson. 50. player

Notre Dame. Pat Connaughton. 51. player. 38. The Orlando Magic could use some outside shooting off the bench. Replacing the older guards off the bench with a set-shooter off the bench like Pat Connaughton would make sense for the Magic going forward.. SG

Josh Richardson. 52. player. 79. The Dallas Mavericks could very well lose their star SG Monta Ellis this offseason. Finding an athletic replacement with a long wingspan like Josh Richardson would give the Mavericks another young, defensive minded guy to help Dallas stay physical with the monsters in the West. . SG. Tennessee

Oregon. Joseph Young. 53. player. 156. With the lack of explosive athleticism in the backcourt behind Kyrie Irving, the Cleveland Cavaliers could try to fill that void late in this draft. If Joseph Young is still on the board, the Cavs could use him as a legitimate backup off the bench who could provide a spark for the mostly veteran second unit in Cleveland. . SG/PG

The Utah Jazz have still not found a solid backup to Rudy Gobert since trading Enes Kanter away. Bringing on an undersized big in Alan Williams who has shown he can be an absolute monster on the glass is a gamble that could be worth the Jazz’s time if they can get a legit backup to their rising star at the center position inside.. C. UC Santa Barbara. Alan Williams. 54. player. 118

Vince Hunter. 55. player. 29. The San Antonio Spurs will be looking to take a shot at a guy who can crash the glass. Vince Hunter is an explosive big who did a fantastic job at crashing the glass on both ends last year. He could be the kind of player San Antonio likes in their system and develops into a role player worthy of the Spurs uniform in the near future.. PF. UTEP

player. 69. The New Orleans Pelicans could very well look at a possible backup for Anthony Davis here if the team decides to trade Ryan Anderson. A guy with the NBA-ready game and physicality like Larry Nance Jr could develop extremely well behind one of the golden boys of the NBA in New Orleans. . PF. Wyoming. Larry Nance Jr. 56

Bowling Green. Richaun Holmes. 57. player. 73. The Denver Nuggets could be looking for a physical PF to fill the bench behind the energetic Kenneth Faried. The large profile of youngster Rachaun Holmes could be a worthy gamble very late in the draft for the Nuggets to take a shot on, with an already young roster of players looking to prove themselves. . PF

93. It’s not a rare thing for the Philadelphia 76ers to continue to stockpile overseas talent late in the NBA draft. Taking a flier on a late-blooming prospect in another country like Awudu Abass would be a calculated gamble for a team that loves to take a shot at players away from the USA on a consistent basis. . PF. Italy. Awudu Abass. 58. player

SG. Kentucky. Aaron Harrison. 59. player. 125. The Atlanta Hawks can go a lot of ways with this pick, but it’ll more than likely end up a D-League player. This could be a time for them to go for a highly ranked player who may have fell far and seen as a possible steal, like Aaron Harrison of Kentucky who may not get the attention his brother did. He’s far from a sure thing, but this late in the draft, it could very well be worth the gamble for Atlanta.

player. 93. The 60th pick has to be the “best player in the draft” situation for the Philadelphia 76ers. Taking a guy who may not get the major attention from a smaller school, but has the scoring prowess to warrant an NBA draft selection like Tyler Harvey could pan out to be an absolute steal for the 76ers at the very end of the NBA draft.. SG. Eastern Washington. Tyler Harvey. 60
