The New Orleans Pelicans stayed in the game in the first three quarters, yet ran out of gas late in a loss to the Boston Celtics.

The New Orleans Pelicans fought tooth and nail with the Boston Celtics, yet could not finish the game strong, losing 104-97.

The Pelicans stuck around after taking a few strong runs from the Boston Celtics throughout the game. New Orleans answered every single Boston run with a run of their own, keeping the game in their hands. New Orleans was down just four with under a minute to go.

However, poor offensive execution and 23 turnovers ended up catching up to the Pelicans at the end as they could not keep up with the Celtics.

Toney Douglas led the team in scoring with 19 points along with seven rebounds. Luke Babbitt, Tim Frazier, Jordan Hamilton, James Ennis and Alexis Ajinca all finished with at least 10 points on the night.

Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas carried the offensive load, scoring _ points to lead his team to the win.

Other Observations:

  • The New Orleans Pelicans had a disastrous first quarter in this game. The Pelicans finished the first quarter with eight turnovers and six fouls. Luckily for them, Boston failed to take advantage in the first 12 minutes, shooting 36% from the field and 2-9 from behind the arc in the first frame. The fact this game didn’t get out of hand earlier was kind of a miracle in itself.
  • In the first half, the New Orleans Pelicans did have one major category of success: Free Throws. The New Orleans Pelicans got to the line for ten free-throw attempts, making eight of those, while the Boston Celtics only got to the line for seven attempts, making five. While the Pelicans were still down eight points at halftime, they have to take their advantage in aggression drawing fouls as an area to be proud of against a young, quick and aggressive group in the Celtics.
  • The Pelicans just could not hold onto the basketball. The 23 team turnovers ties a season high for the Pelicans in which they’ve lost 49 games. That’s unreal, especially with how close they were in this contest the entire night. Blown chances caught up to this team. The nine extra looks for Boston certainly helped them win this game.
  • This was frustrating because of the chances New Orleans had to steal a big win against a playoff caliber team. Boston did not play well and the Pelicans had their fair share of shots. However, this is still a young and mistake prone team. Still, frustrating.
