As we near the anticipated release of NBA 2K17, here is our take on how the New Orleans Pelicans’ ratings will shake out.

On September 20, the gaming developer 2K Sports will release the eighteenth installment of their tremendously popular NBA 2K franchise. As the gaming industry as a whole has picked up in the past decade or so, it has found its way into nearly every industry; professional sports are clearly no exception. Sports video games were fantasy before the “F” became capitalized and we all started pouring money into each other’s bank accounts.

I’ve been playing NBA 2K since the 2K5 installment, when I scored 103 points with the point god Chauncey Billups. But as I’m sad to admit, Chauncey isn’t around anymore, and a new generation of NBA players have populated the rosters of these virtual teams. More to the point, a new core of players have moved to the New Orleans Pelicans in real life, and the team will have a much different makeup when you control them in the newest edition of the game, NBA 2K17.

The development company and their brand ambassador Ronnie 2K have been hard at work revving their engines as this year’s release date draws nearer. In an effort to drum up excitement and intrigue, the creators have promised to give out a player’s rating if he asks Ronnie for it on social media. Several players have already done this, and savagery has ensued:

In last year’s installment, Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis was both the cover man and one of the game’s highest-rated players, falling in at a very nice 92 overall. Ratings in the 90s are generally reserved for the absolute cream of the crop; the only other players to land such a high initial rating last year were Chris Paul, James Harden, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James.

I say initial because there has been in the last several versions of the game a weekly update of ratings based on the tribulations that players undergo throughout the long NBA season. Wherever these Pelicans start, they’ll likely finish quite a way up or down from their initial ratings.
