Even with a strong shooting percentage from the field, the New Orleans Pelicans could not fly over the tough Utah Jazz in a home loss.

Things became painful for the New Orleans Pelicans tonight.

New Orleans shot 45.5% from the field, yet could not overcome domination in every facet of the game, in a home loss to the Utah Jazz.

The Pelicans were in the game for most of the first half, getting the deficit to within two at one point. However, poor late execution got them down nine right before halftime.

The second half was a completely different story.

More from Pelicans News

New Orleans scored just 41 points in the second half, while giving up 65 points to Utah in the same stretch. The Pelicans gave up at least 28 points in every single quarter of tonight’s game.

Anthony Davis was held in check for the entire game by Utah’s strong frontcourt. Davis put up 12 points, 10 rebounds and a season high in blocks with six. Terrence Jones led the Pelicans in scoring, with 21 points on 9-16 shooting from the field.

Seven-Time All-Star Joe Johnson led the Utah Jazz in scoring, with 27 points on 10-14 shooting and six made three-pointers.

This means the Pelicans will be on the road for the remainder of the Pre-All Star Game Festivities.

69. Final. 127. 118. 94

B. Jrue Holiday had a decent offensive game tonight, but it meant nothing. Even with his 15 points, six rebounds and two assists. However, the Jazz put him in difficult spots all game. He could not attack the paint and was forced to make iffy decisions, resulting in his four turnovers. The Jazz are a tough team. Holiday put up decent stats, but could not swing the momentum of the game.. PG. . JRUE HOLIDAY

C+. Buddy Hield is here to shoot the basketball and learn. Hield shot 3-7 from the field and 2-6 from deep for his eight points. However, New Orleans takes him off the court for the mid portion of every game, due to his struggles in other areas of the game. His defense needs work and his rotations are slow. Until he fixes those areas, he’ll likely be in the game to fire away.. SG. . BUDDY HIELD

C-. Solomon Hill’s three-point attempts were nothing short of painful. His shot looked flat. His defense on Gordon Hayward had plenty of massive lapses, that led to dunks. Overall, this was a bad game for Hill.. SF. . SOLOMON HILL

B. Terrence Jones may have looked like one of the biggest question marks for the Pelicans pre-season, but he has become one of the only consistencies with the new additions. Jones shot 9-16 from the floor to lead the Pelicans with 21 points. The thing that has helped New Orleans the most is the fact he’s not afraid to go at defenders. It’s tough, against Utah’s size. However, it gave the Pels some of their only true offense this game.. PF. . TERRENCE JONES

B+. Anthony Davis played his heart out tonight. However, the Jazz had a well-executed gameplan of shutting down his offense completely. Davis did score 12 points, with 10 rebounds and a season high six blocks. He made an impact outside of scoring tonight. However, his team could not pick up the load needed to make this game competitive.. C/PF. . ANTHONY DAVIS

There was only one real pleasant surprise in this game. That was Tim Frazier. Tim did not have the biggest stats, with just 11 points, four assists and four fouls. However, he got to the line for 10 free-throw attempts. That aggression is something this Pelicans team lacked all across the board tonight. When he got the ball, he wanted to attack. Good for him. Finally a strong performance from the youngster, who has fallen far back in the depth chart.. PG. . TIM FRAZIER. B+

. LANGSTON GALLOWAY. C-. Langston Galloway continues to be ice cold from the field and it continues to bite the Pelicans, when he’s on the floor. At the end of the day, 0-3 from behind the arc will not cut it for someone who was seen as a “Marksman” not long ago.. SG

SF/SG. . E'TWAUN MOORE. B-. E’Twaun Moore once again showed the assertiveness to go at the Jazz and score the basketball. His 6-11 shooting helped get 13 points, for a team lacking offense entirely. However, his defense was not strong tonight and his four turnovers seemed forced. Utah played well in every area tonight and Moore did not have a great answer, outside of his shot.

C+. Dante Cunningham is once again a player who will rebound the ball and hustle. However, his shot is still not consistent enough for him to be a real threat to opposing teams. He does what he can talent wise, but it is not enough in games like tonight, where New Orleans needs production.. PF/SF. . DANTE CUNNINGHAM

C+. It’s hard to figure out of Donatas is comfortable playing the center position, especially in games like tonight. While his ball movement is good, his rebounding is a bit sluggish and he needs to work on boxing out with more force. He did have five boards and a steal, but he failed to do much to make a true impact on the game.. C/PF. . DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS

Other Observations:

  • The game needs no other observations than this: The Pelicans got beat in every single way possible tonight. They did not beat Utah in any significant way. This is a team that looks lost on what they want to be and how they want to play. New Orleans want to push the pace, yet can not execute their transition. They want to be forceful inside, yet can not find enough players to box out and be threats posting up. The Pelicans need to find something they are good at, that they can consistently thrive on in games against their opponents. Until they can, games like this will continue to happen and become the norm.
