This play starts off with a side pick-and-roll from Arron Afflalo and Robin Lopez. As is common with the Pelicans guards, Tyreke Evans got hung on the screen causing Omer Asik to have to stay with Afflalo for a bit longer than he would like.

The problem behind everything though is everything else happening in the play. While we don’t know exactly the Pelicans scheme it seems like Anthony Davis was supposed to rotate over and take away the Lopez roll with Quincy Pondexter floating down to take away a dump to LaMarcus Aldridge. Yet Davis nor Pondexter move leaving Lopez and easy catch and basket.

Any time a big man is able to catch the ball that cleanly and that close to the rim it will be a problem for a defense.
