The shooting guard position is a lot more difficult to analyze than the point guard mostly because it’s tough to pick out the two best. The position has had a lot of good players, but none have really made a large enough impact on the team to run away with the first team. The one with the biggest impact would probably be David Wesley.

  • Wesley, the current television color analyst for the New Orleans Pelicans, played in New Orleans for four seasons and made the most impact of any shooting guard so far in the team’s history. Wesley averaged over 10 points per game every season he was on the team including 2002-2003 where he scored 16.7 points per contest and shot 42.4% from behind the three-point line.

Statistically, Wesley’s biggest attribute was his balanced reliability on the floor. David Wesley finished in the top 10 in New Orleans basketball history in minutes played, three-pointers made, free throws, assists, steals and total points. The balanced attack he brought to New Orleans basketball helped get them into the playoffs every year he was there.

In the short history of New Orleans basketball, it’s tough to come up with someone who did more at the shooting guard position in their little time on the team than David Wesley. We hear him every day commenting the team, and until someone comes in and proves themselves at that position, he will hold the mark as the best shooting guard in the team’s existence so far.
