Sports medicine is a very important and growing topic discussion in the NBA and for the New Orleans Pelicans. This new series will focus on those topics. We begin by going through taping and wrapping injuries, something the Pels have extra experience with.

Medical staffs are very important to a team’s longevity throughout the course of a season. That includes the New Orleans Pelicans.

Team physicians and trainers assist in rehabilitative efforts and treatments. Every franchise must have qualified personnel, that are able to treat and heal the club’s players in an efficient manner. Furthermore, medical doctors have the responsibility of getting players back into action, in the safest procedures possible. Sports medicine is the solution.

As fans have have experienced over the past several years, many New Orleans Pelicans have suffered from a multitude of injuries. From the star of the team in Anthony Davis, to many other key role players. The list of injuries and how they occur has been a bit perplexing to say the least.

One of New Orleans’ key free agents (Jrue Holiday) has battled severe injuries to his shin over the past three seasons, which has caused some to question his durability.  

Quincy Pondexter is an intriguing player, who has missed the past two seasons due to his knee ailments. With this frequent amount of injuries and the duration it takes to recover, one can tell the importance of having a good medical department. The team has began to trend upward in the area of getting players to come back fully healthy.

The purpose of this article is to begin and educate fans on how sports physicians go about treating players in the correct fashion. The first topic of discussion is taping and wrapping injuries.

Taping

Taping player injuries is a critical step towards recovery. It is one of the most common methods of sports medicine, as many athletes have experienced sprained ankles, jammed wrists, dislocated phalanges, etc. By taping a player’s injury, it allows for two very important steps in the recovery process. The process aids in the following:

  • Stabilization – Keeping the ligament or extremity properly firm in a safe position.
  • Support – Assists or balances injured area of the body.

It’s very important to know which kind of tape to use and the application technique, depending upon the type of injury as well.

Wrapping

Wrapping is another method of recovery, due to it’s ability to aid in functionality, muscle support and reduces range of motion. It is very important to clean the injured area and ensure that there isn’t any debris that could be wrapped.

Other important tools for this particular method of sports medicine are adhesives, adherents, lubricants and proper scissors.
