New Orleans Pelicans – Five Major Weaknesses Next Season
By Alex Stokes
Three-Point Shooting
The game has evolved over the last few years, with 3 point shooting becoming more and more invaluable. Unfortunately for the Pels, this has not been one of their strong points.
Last year, the Pels ranked 19th in three-point field goal percentage shooting at 35%. Only the Hawks, Bulls and OKC ranked lower who made the playoffs (all were eliminated in the first round), the other 13 teams who were in the playoffs ranked above them.
The top three teams in three-point field goal percentage in order were the Spurs, Cavs, and Warriors. Two of those teams made the Finals and the other was a Conference finalist.
The Pels were 13th in three-points attempted with 26.8 and made 9.4 which was only 14th in the league. Again, the highest volume shooters from 3 were the Rockets, Cavs, Celtics and Warriors. This shows a strong trend with 3 point shooting and success last year.
This is an area in which the Pels need to perform much better in, and they do have the shooters to do it. As discussed in “The New Orleans Pelicans Have Shooting, Now They Need Volume,” which is a blueprint for what the Pels need to do this year to make the playoffs.
Without a vast improvement in how many threes the New Orleans Pelicans shoot, they will likely be a remedial team yet again. Look for the team to shoot more often from downtown with their plethora of guards and whatever wing is brought on the team in light of the Solomon Hill injury.
