8. Tony Allen: C

NEW ORLEANS, LA – NOVEMBER 29: Tony Allen
NEW ORLEANS, LA – NOVEMBER 29: Tony Allen /

It’s pretty fair to assume that Tony Allen will not give you much on the offensive side of the ball. But at the very least, in years past, he has been able to make up for this offensive lacking with defensive prowess as a career 2.2 defensive box plus-minus player.

This year, not so much……

It is not that Allen has been a bad defender thus far, as if that were the case, he would probably have some sort of crisis of identity. But this year, Allen has been just about as average on defense as you can get. His DRPM is .31, not nearly good enough to make up for his -1.93 while his assignments are actually shooting .7% better with Allen on them.

The likely cause of his defensive problems are age. Though he is able to defend three-point shooters very well, with opponents shooting 28.2% from beyond the arc, his opponent’s two-point percentage is 60.5%.

Allen’s defensive struggles have caused a mighty decline in minutes, averaging a career low 13.6 MPG.
