Greg Monroe is the hero the New Orleans Pelicans need

3. Pelicans will be forced to truly “Do it Big”
Most assumed when the Pelicans acquired DeMarcus Cousins they would be a throwback basketball team. Slow the pace, play the post, bully defenses, and kick-out to shooters. Instead, the Pelicans have been one of the more fast paced teams in basketball. They currently sit at 5th among the likes of Golden State, Philly, and the Lakers.
Due to their unique play styles, AD and Boogie were able to thrive together, showing glimpses of both old school and new school basketball. The pair spent a lot of time around the perimeter, and Cousins even led the Pels in three point attempts by a wide margin (and still does) before his injury.
Adding Greg Monroe would change things a bit. The 6-10 center is a true back to the basket big-man who doesn’t settle for many long jumpers, and knows his strengths sit closer to the basket.
That would require NOLA to slow the game down more frequently for their big man. Monroe hasn’t been the strongest of defenders over time either which could cause trouble for an already shaky transition defense. It’s all about perspective in the end. If you thought running and gunning was a mistake with Boogie, you should definitely think it is with Monroe considering Cousins is the superior athlete.
