The biggest offseason chatter in regards to the New Orleans Pelicans has mainly revolved around the impending free agency of All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins. Will the 27-yeard-old stay put in the “Big Easy”? Can NOLA afford his services? Do they even want to re-sign Boogie? While all these questions are in fact quite interesting and entertaining, there is one train of thought in regards to the Cousins conundrum that has yet to get its fair share of attention – a sign-and-trade.
The Pelicans near future will be directly impacted on the verdict of this summers DeMarcus Cousins sweepstakes. Should he re-up with the franchise, the Pelicans will continue to have one of the most talented front-courts in recent memory with Anthony Davis and Boogie manning the middle. Should he walk, NOLA will have a bit more money to invest in other positional necessities. And, should the Pels and Cousins decide to agree on a sign-and-trade, both parties could end up as happy campers.
The problem with this last idea is, due to Cousins’ injury, what kind of package could NOLA get in return? Though he is one of the best talents in the league today, he is coming off of a left achilles tear. This form of injury has cut so many promising careers short. Because of this, teams may be weary of offering too much to acquire him. However, just because it may be hard to find a decent return package for Boogie, doesn’t mean it’s impossible. So, without further ado, here are three potential trade ideas should both NOLA and Cousins decide to agree to a sign-and-trade.
