Elfrid Payton Signs A One-Year Deal With The New Orleans Pelicans
By Mark Nilon
Day one of the NBA free agency period has surely been one for the ages. Finally, the New Orleans Pelicans dip their hands into the action as they reportedly have come to terms on a deal with point guard Elfrid Payton.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, The New Orleans Pelicans have signed free agent point guard, and Louisiana native, Elfrid Payton. The deal is reportedly for one year however, specific numbers have not been clarified. Though it may not be the splashiest deal NOLA fans were/ are hoping for, the organization is bringing on a talented player at a position they could certainly use more depth at.
From 2011-14 Payton played collegially at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In three seasons the point guard put up overall averages of 14.3 PPG, 4.9 APG and 5.3 RPG and, in his final season, led the Cajuns to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament (their first since 2005). After getting trounced in the first round, Payton declared for that years NBA draft. He would go on to be selected 10th overall by the Orlando Magic.

During his three-and-a-half seasons with the Magic, Payton proved his worth through his versatility and playmaking abilities. In 253 starts the 6-4 point guard managed to put up averages of 11.1 PPG, 6.4 APG, 4.2 RPG and 1.3 SPG. Though the stats tell the tale of a solid NBA point guard, the Magic saw things a little differently. Right before the final buzzer sounded at this years trade deadline Orlando sent Payton to Phoenix in exchange for a 2018 second-round pick.
For the remainder of the regular season Phoenix still struggled to garner victories, however, Payton proved to be a solid contributor for the franchise. In 19 games with the Suns he put up 11.8 PPG, 6.2 APG and 5.3 RPG in 29.0 MPG.
Though he may not have been the best player available, the Pelicans signing Payton could do them some good. Behind Rajon Rondo and Jrue Holiday, NOLA’s backcourt depth was a bit lacking during the 2017-18 season. By bringing on a guy like Elfrid Payton, the Pelicans are adding someone who can nab boards, attack the basket and, most importantly, create for others.
Bringing on a guy who can reliably feed players like Anthony Davis in the low post or Jrue Holiday on a drive and kick is never a bad thing. Add in the fact that he grew up in Louisiana and you have a sweet “home-coming” story for the fans.

At just 24 years of age, Payton has a lot to offer a franchise in need of back court help. The potential rewards of signing a guy like Elfrid Payton to a one-year deal completely outweigh the risks.
Frankly, we should all be excited about this signing by Dell Demps.
