Derrick White: PG, San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio loves their role and top bench players, so this one might be tricky to pull off. Derrick White exploded onto the scene this season after the Spurs lost Dejounte Murray and 2018 1st round rookie Lonnie Walker IV both to injury. Starting 55 games and playing in 67 for the silver and black, White averaged 9.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game.

But you ask, “Why do the Pelicans need him on their roster?” His impact showed more on the floor than what his stats say. He had big games on offense and defense across the season and made vast improvements from year one to two. It’s real fear he’ll get buried on a depth chart that features DeRozan, Murray, Mills, Belinelli, Walker, and Forbes.

An opportunity to see what White could do in a bigger role for another team isn’t a long-shot, but San Antonio role players are just as valuable as their starters to them, and there is a track record of players leaving the Spurs and never living up to what they did in San Antonio. This might be a risky one depending on what the Spurs would want back, but an interesting thought nonetheless.
