5 NBA Draft targets for Pelicans if high pick comes via Anthony Davis trade
By Cody Taylor
RJ Barrett, F, Duke
Zion’s roommate at Duke would be an excellent pick up for the Pelicans to go alongside our top pick. Being Robin to Zion’s Batman did well for the freshman, who went on to average 22.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 45.4 FG% and 30.8% from 3.
Barrett’s ability to get a bucket and command the respect of opposing defenses just as Zion did will not be ignored in the NBA as he continues to grow and develop from college to the pros. He is very quick in the open court, able to get into open space, and operates very well without the ball in his hands, so he can give Zion screens in the pick-and-roll.
I think, if available, RJ Barrett is the clear cut choice to partner up with Zion because of their history together at Duke, and it’d give him a chance to operate and play without the spotlight being solely on him, as that would definitely be on Zion initially in New Orleans.
Adding Barrett to the roster, who already has fantastic chemistry with Zion, would jumpstart the Pelicans’ rebuild instantly. This is a player that could be a big difference maker for the franchise. He likely won’t fall below the #3 pick, which is one the Pelicans could very realistically get back from the Knicks in an AD trade.
