#5) Monte Morris

Monte Morris was an extremely efficient backup point guard for the Nuggets this season and a key contributor to their overall success. In the 24 minutes of action he saw on a nightly basis, Morris compiled averages of 10.4 points, 3.6 assists, and 0.9 steals on 49 percent from the field and 41 percent from deep.

The Pelicans do have depth at this position; Frank Jackson played well down the stretch with an extended role due to Holiday’s injury, and Payton brought solid contribution as well.  However, Payton is a UFA this summer and is likely to earn a more lucrative contract. If his representation and the Pelicans can’t find common ground on an extension, Morris could step in this role adequately.

But before you ridicule me, let me point out that I’m not saying the Pelicans should not re-sign Payton. This would solely be an alternative, put down the pitchforks. Now with that crisis averted, let’s get back to Morris. Being undersized—standing in at 6’3 and weighing just 175 pounds—Morris utilizes his speed and craftiness to compensate for lack of an intimidating stature.

He’s also a smart player, despite his youthful age of 23-years-old. He makes good decisions with the basketball, does not turn the ball over much and creates plays for his teammates. Morris actually finished second in the league in assist to turnover ratio, scoring a 5.7 in that regard. And for a Pelicans squad that finished 24th in the league in turnovers with 14.8 per contest—Morris’ ball security would be a welcoming asset.
