Ranking the Los Angeles Lakers Top 5 assets in an Anthony Davis trade
By Nolan Jensen
#2) 2019 First round draft pick
Draft lottery night had a few surprises, did it not? The Pelicans landed first overall pick and the rights to Zion Williamson despite having just a 6 percent chance of doing so. Phoenix—tied for first in mathematical odds (14 percent) with Cleveland and New York to win the lottery—landed outside the top five with the sixth overall pick. New York had no luck, no real surprise there, and Cleveland was denied their fourth lottery win this decade and landed with the fifth overall pick.
Of all those surprises, Los Angeles may have had the biggest one. The Lakers entered the Draft with a minuscule 9.4 percent of landing inside the top four; but despite overwhelming odds opposing them, they landed fourth overall pick. Now the question is: Could they shop this pick in an Anthony Davis trade?
The Lakers offered nearly every asset they had after Davis’ demand went public but to no avail. Even going as far as providing cap relief for the Pelicans with Solomon Hill‘s egregious contract. But could this newfound asset be incorporated into a newly constructed package? Their previous package was enticing, this could be too much to say no to.
Players such as Jarrett Culver, Darius Garland, Coby White, DeAndre Hunter, and Cam Reddish could realistically still all be available once the Lakers on the clock. It’s feasible to think the Pelicans could suggest that the Lakers pick a certain player in particular to influence a trade between the two parties. The Pelicans could hypothetically leave this Draft with two picks within the top 4 to build around.
