Nickeil Alexander-Walker

Grade: A-

With their final selection in the first round, the New Orleans Pelicans went with Nickeil Alexander-Walker out of Virginia Tech. The sophomore guard averaged 16.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists last season on 47.4 percent shooting (eFG% of 54.6), including 37.4 percent from distance on 1.7 makes per game.

Firstly, the shooting is something the Pelicans desperately need. He might not be lights out, but Alexander-Walker is a dynamic guard. He has a good offensive presence of mind, he can find the open man as illustrated by his 4.0 assists, put the ball on the deck and beat his man off the dribble and is a nice finisher at the rim.

He’s no slouch on the defensive end of the court, either. Alexander-Walker utilizes his long frame and 6’9 wingspan to its fullest. He’s a good on-ball defender, got nice hands and good defensive timing. Last season he averaged 1.9 steals per game, but he will need to put on a little mass to hang with the more physical guards of the NBA.

Another issue in his game is his turnovers—ball security will have to improve (2.9 TOV per game). Despite that, he’s a smart basketball player, got good instincts offensively, moves well without the basketball, often makes the right play, and his activity on the defensive end is great.

Under the guidance of Jrue Holiday, he could mature into a very productive two-way guard at the NBA level.

Next. Pels take Jaxson Hayes. dark
