Dallas versus New Orleans is slowly becoming a thing in the NFL. The New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks could also be on a collision course.

Ask anyone in New Orleans to just say the word Dallas. The tone used is the verbal equivalent to soured horseradish. Gayle Benson is building a solid franchise in New Orleans, one that attracts free agents like J.J. Redick, or gets the attention of Derrick Favors.

Mark Cuban is still chasing his first big free agent. Through the draft and a trade, Dallas has opened a competitive window that clashes with the New Orleans Pelicans. The similarities will breed a more intense rivalry.

The odds of Luka Doncic becoming a star are on par with Zion Williamson’s chances. Watching his rookie season left little doubt that Doncic is the future in Dallas. Cuban made a trade with New York to bring in Kristaps Porzingis as a developing second star. Both are young enough to keep Dallas in contention through 2030.

Keeping Luka Doncic in check is key to beating the Dallas Mavericks. He is one of the smartest point guards in the league, even though he is one of the youngest. Dallas is a team of unproven talent behind Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis.

Sure Seth Curry can shoot and Justin Jackson can jump, but the Pelicans can negate those threats easily. The rest of the Mavericks roster suggests a bottom five Western Conference team. The New Orleans Pelicans should test the supporting cast while letting Holiday add buckets to his MVP campaign.
