3 coaches who could fix the New Orleans Pelicans next season
By Willie Lutz
Becky Hammon, San Antonio Spurs Assistant Head Coach
Joining the San Antonio Spurs staff in 2014 after appearing in six All-Star games as a member of the WNBA, Becky Hammon is one of the best basketball minds available on the head coaching market.
Hammon has been apart of a Spurs organization that consistently generates winning, joining the organization the year the team won their most recent championship over the Heatles-era Miami Heat.
If there’s any front office in this league looking to make their squad the first to hire a woman to head their coaching staff, the New Orleans Pelicans would be the ones to make the move; they’ve proven over their history in this league that they’re willing to promote diversity across the organization.
While some speculate Hammon may wind up with the New York Knicks if Steve Mills and Scott Perry are willing to pony up for a long term deal, but many coaches tend to avoid the toxic organization.
Following Gregg Popovich’s unsolicited comments to the media about his distaste for the New York Knicks’ actions surrounding the firing of David Fizdale, it seems odd that Hammon would be incredibly interested in the position.
It seems that the current head coach of the Spurs’ would his assistant to make sure the deal was incredibly favorable deal from New York if she’s going to take a job with that organization, as she’ll have plenty of options around the league this offseason.
If the Knicks aren’t going to give Hammon any favors in her contract or give her superstar talent to work with, she could easily find work with a more apt team.
Of course, that is if Hammon doesn’t wind up taking the head role with the San Antonio if the 70-year-old Popovich decides to retire sometime in the few seasons. For the past few seasons, those around the league have speculated Hammon is truly the Spurs’ coach-in-waiting.
