Still attempting to make a surge for the eighth seed, the New Orleans Pelicans seem to need at least one more piece before the NBA Trade Deadline to solidify a run towards a playoff birth.

With just over four days left before the NBA Trade Deadline, the New Orleans Pelicans seem like a team that could benefit from making a small move to boost their roster in the short term.

Standing 20-30 and twelfth in the Western Conference, the Pelicans will need to make a four-game climb to knock the Memphis Grizzlies out of their playoff spot and take control of the eighth seed.

While the team is likely to stay away from any star-level deals in the coming days, the Pelicans could certainly make a small addition that doesn’t separate them from their trove of picks that could allow them to add a superstar down the road.

Seemingly, the team won’t be moving on from any of Jrue Holiday, J.J. Redick, or Derrick Favors before Thursday, as David Griffin is intent on continuing to develop a winning culture in New Orleans.

Thursday at 2 p.m. CT, the league’s trade window will close and teams will then no longer be able to pluck ideal players from the other 29 teams around the league, forcing them to consider options on waiver claims, free agency, or even by searching the G-Leauge.

Approaching the NBA Trade Deadline, the New Orleans Pelicans were very lucky to get Zion Williamson back on the floor early, so they could start making evaluating how the pieces on the roster fit around their marquee man.

There is some thinking that the New Orleans Pelicans could add a higher-level player if they’re willing to include a lottery level pick in a package.

With that said, it might benefit the team to hold on to their 2020 First Round pick and trade the selection when it becomes a known commodity int he summer.

In the case that the team wants to make a move on the margins, there is a small grouping of players who could be available for the cost of some second-round picks.

While second-round picks can still turn into great players, there seems to be logic in packaging up some of those picks to upgrade the New Orleans Pelicans’ roster this season.
