Jaxson Hayes, Center

Contract:

2019-20 $4.86 million

2020-21 $5.1 million

2021-22 $5.34 million

2022-23 $6.8 million

Rookies who produce on their original contracts are one of the most valuable commodities in the NBA.

Veterans get paid handsomely, which is why every team needs a few young guys who can play, leaving more money open for the high-priced vets.

Jaxson Hayes is just such a rookie.

Hayes is averaging 7.5 points and four rebounds in just 17 minutes per game, but figures to be a big part of the New Orleans Pelicans’ future.

With Derrick Favors and his $17.65 million contract likely to walk in the offseason, Hayes is certain to see a lot more time off the bench or as a starter next season.

While he needs to develop a shot and play better on defense, Hayes’ per-36 numbers are enough to get the New Orleans Pelicans excited.

Hayes is averaging 15.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and two blocks per 36 minutes, numbers that would make him a huge value at just $4.86 million.

The question is whether Hayes can stay on the floor long enough to get those numbers, as he has a problem with silly fouls and is often out of place on defense.

Even if Hayes is coming off the bench next season, his contract is great value, especially when you look around the league and see what guys like Bismack Biyombo ($17 million) and Cody Zeller ($14.4 million) are making.

The New Orleans Pelicans are going to have to find guys like Hayes who can contribute while they are still on their rookie deals.
