New Orleans Pelicans: Josh Gray is Dominating the G-League
How Gray could fit with the New Orleans Pelicans
The truth is he probably doesn’t.
The New Orleans Pelicans already have a third point guard in Frank Jackson who is more proven than Gray, and though he is a restricted free agent, can probably be retained on a cheap deal.
If the Pelicans decide not to keep Jackson, or some other team hands him a fat offer sheet, Gray may get a look.
Depending on what happens with Jackson, the Pelicans will need a backup point guard and would prefer one that can facilitate the offense for their bench shooters.
So far Gray has mostly facilitated for himself, but his ability to get to the rim could prove valuable for a second unit that is full of 3-point shooters.
If Gray shows he can run the offense, get into the paint and find open shooters, he may just have a place with the Pelicans.
Gray can score in bunches and could be a lighting in a bottle type option for the Pelicans on nights when other player’s shots aren’t falling. He could be a change-of-pace guy like Ish Smith who comes in and does his best to wear the other team out.
The question is whether Gray can shoot and defend enough not to be a liability.
If his 3-point shooting ticks up and Gray proves he can stay in front of NBA point guards, he could be a dynamic scoring option off the bench.
It’s doubtful the Pelicans will go this direction, as they’ve probably seen enough from Jackson to give him the nod over an unproven G-League veteran.
But Josh Gray is an interesting story and we’ll be cheering for him to get a shot at his dream.
