New Orleans Pelicans Mock Draft- The 60th Pick

Considering that few players selected with the 60th pick have actually made the NBA, it’s not likely the Pelicans are going to get a guy who plays right away or ever.

This pick could easily be a foreign player that can be stashed overseas or a guy who they know is going straight to the G-League.

They can swing for the fences on overall talent or just take a guy who has one NBA skill that can be developed and honed into a role.

Trendon Watford is one of those potential high ceiling, low floor guys the Pelicans can take a flyer on.

He has plus size at 6-foot-9, 235 lbs. with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, which is something teams are looking for.

Watford has a soft scoring touch around the rim and has a knack for finding openings for his shot. He averaged 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds as a freshman at LSU.

Although Watford has the size, he lacks the quickness to defend most wings in the NBA and his shot needs a lot of work. He shot just 26.9 percent from long-range and 67.4 percent from the line, numbers that would need to improve dramatically if he wants a shot in the NBA.

Watford is one of those guys who would benefit from another year  in college, but is probably smart to leave in a year with so little wing talent in the draft.

How Watford fits on the New Orleans Pelicans

Watford is a perfect G-League candidate, as he will be just 19-years-old and needs some reps to polish his game.

With his size and good athleticism, he has some of the things teams covet, but until he develops a better shot, it will be tough for him to score in the NBA as he lacks the quickness to beat defenders off the dribble.

Watford has a decent ceiling, especially as a defender, but will need to develop at least a corner 3-point shot to be the kind of stretch-four that plays along Zion Williamson.

The New Orleans Pelicans are the envy of most of the NBA, as they are loaded with young, exciting talent and still have draft assets to burn.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see them package all of these picks to move up and get someone they like more, but these three players would all be worthy of a second round flyer if they are available when the Pelicans choose.
