New Orleans Pelicans: Which fringe reserves could get minutes?

Frank Jackson

I was impressed with the play of Frank Jackson before the suspension of play, and he has been even better since things resumed.

Jackson has found more zen to his game, not forcing the issue or trying to move at warp speed like he was early in the season.

He’s been more patient off the ball, finding openings, but not hesitating when he gets a chance.

He’s knocked down some open shots from long-range in the last two games and been aggressive with the ball, which is what you want from your back up point guard.

But the most impressive thing has been his defense. Jackson has the strength to defend much taller opponents, which is something that could be a weapon if the Pelicans decide to go small against bigger teams.

He held his own against Jokic, and was able to use his body to keep from getting pushed around. He has a lot of defensive similarities to teammate Jrue Holiday, who also has a long wingspan and uses his strength to body larger guys.

Jackson was in and out of the rotation all year, but made his case to be included after his performances in the last two scrimmages. Jackson was consistently impactful when he was in the game, brought a new level of energy and gave the Pels a defensive spark.

We know Josh Hart, J.J. Redick and Melli will be the first three off the bench, but Jackson has made his case for the rotation and may see some important minutes in the real games.

The New Orleans Pelicans can’t get cocky, but they should be confident heading into Thursday’s matchup with the Utah Jazz.

The Pels and Jazz have played some tight games this year, so expect a war when things kick off Thursday.
