New Orleans Pelicans: Things to Watch with Season on the Line vs. Spurs
The New Orleans Pelicans’ bench has to play well against the Spurs.
Can the Bench Step Up?
The New Orleans Pelicans’ bench scored 44 points against the Wizards and their defensive energy was the difference in the game.
But this hasn’t been the case for most of the bubble games, as only Josh Hart has played consistently well off the Pelicans’ bench.
They will need another big effort against the Spurs, who are deep and their talent level doesn’t drop off much when they bring in the bench.
The Pelicans will continue to need Jackson and Hart’s energy, but they also need Melli and J.J. Redick to make shots.
Melli finally made a couple of three’s against Washington, which was nice to see, as he has been in a deep funk and the Pelicans’ offense is a LOT better when he makes shots.
Redick has been largely inconsistent off the Pels’ bench, though he did get the start against Washington.
If Jackson, Hart, Melli and Redick can all get near double figures against the Spurs, and play with defensive intensity, the Pelicans should be in good shape.
If Melli comes out throwing up bricks, Jackson isn’t aggressive and Redick isn’t hitting shots, the Pelicans have no chance.
This is a good test for the young New Orleans Pelicans and these high-pressure minutes will be beneficial down the road.
Let’s hope the Pelicans can keep their season alive for another day and keep getting their young guys run in meaningful games.
