The New Orleans Pelicans need Cassell’s player development.

The Evolution of John Wall

John Wall joined the Wizards just after Sam Cassell and he eventually evolved into one of the best point guards in the league.

Wall credits Cassell for much of this growth and has always said that he was instrumental in getting the most out of his talents.

The New Orleans Pelicans have their own immensely talented point guard in Lonzo Ball, who is just on the cusp of breaking through and becoming one of the top point guards in the league, but he is not there yet.

What better player to get the most out of Lonzo’s talent than Cassell, who was a very successful point guard himself and has already proven he can do it as a coach?

Wall’s numbers improved incrementally under Cassell’s mentorship, culminating in his first All-Star appearance, but most importantly, Wall learned how to play the position.

Wall entered the NBA as an athletic guard who many didn’t think could run the point, but Cassell turned him into a smart point guard, who could do a lot more than run the floor.

He could do the same with Lonzo, who has all of the talent in the world, but still needs to refine some aspects of his game.

If the New Orleans Pelicans want a proven winner from a good coaching tree who has the respect of the players and a history of developing young talent, then they should turn to Sam Cassell.

The Pelicans are being tight lipped about their search, but let’s hope Cassell is part of it.
