3 Coaches the New Orleans Pelicans Should Avoid
Head coaches the New Orleans Pelicans should avoid: Mark Jackson
People must have short memories because Mark Jackson’s name comes up every time there is a coaching vacancy.
He only coached three seasons at Golden State, where he took a team that hadn’t made the playoffs in 17 years and won 47 games in his second season and 51 in his third before being fired and replaced with Steve Kerr.
Jackson is credited with changing the culture in Golden State, building a defensive identity and getting the most out of the talent he had there. So why was he fired?
Well, Jackson has some very outdated views about just about everything, including the gay community, and that didn’t fly in Northern California.
It shouldn’t fly anywhere to be honest, and I don’t see Jackson’s bigoted views, nor his forced Bible study being really popular with this young New Orleans team. Oh, and if you want some real dirt, Google Mark Jackson stripper extortion.
Jackson’s views are his own and he has every right to them, but when you bring them into the locker room, there is potential for disaster.
Let’s not forget another fact: Mark Jackson blatantly fat shamed Zion Williamson on national television in the rookie’s first game.
You think Zion is going to respect him, or want to follow his lead? Hiring Mark Jackson might ensure that Zion’s second contract is not with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Jackson’s old school views and tough love approach aren’t going to work with today’s players, so he and JVG can stay complaining in the broadcast booth on mute (in my house).
There are plenty of good candidates without going with retreads with checkered pasts or guys who have been out of the game for more than a decade.
