New Orleans Pelicans: One Free Agent to Watch in Every Eastern Conference First-Round Series
The New Orleans Pelicans could used D.J. Augustin’s veteran savvy.
D.J. Augustin, Point Guard- Orlando Magic
One of the biggest needs the Pelicans will have is backup point guard.
While some are ready to hand over the keys to the backcourt to Frank Jackson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the duo is not quite there yet and the Pels could use a steady hand.
When both Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday were off the floor, the team struggled to find offense and often gave up big leads.
The Pelicans could use someone who knows how to run an offense, is effective in the pick-and-roll and isn’t a complete sieve on defense.
D.J. Augustin could be their guy.
Currently Augustin is probably priced out of the Pels’ range at $7.25 million, but he is also 32-years-old and unlikely to get another big deal.
Augustin is from New Orleans and may offer up a hometown discount to finish his career with his hometown team, especially since they have a chance to be special.
Augustin would be a good mentor for Lonzo Ball, a great locker room presence and won’t take shots away from the Pels’ stars.
He knows how to fit into an offense and still averages 10.5 points and 4.6 assists in around 24 minutes a game.
If Augustin’s services could be retained on a short, veteran’s minimum deal, he would be a great fit for the New Orleans Pelicans without stunting the growth of their young backcourt.
Honorable Mentions:
Wesley Iwundu, Small Forward- Orlando Magic.
Michael Carter-Williams, Guard- Orlando Magic.
