New Orleans Pelicans Possible Free Agents: Trey Burke

Trey Burke

No player on Dallas has helped himself more than Trey Burke, who went from afterthought to key part of the Mavericks’ offense overnight.

Dallas grabbed Burke off the scrap heap before the restart and is paying him $229,000 for his services, which has to be the best deal going in the league.

Burke has been a consistent spark off the Dallas bench and has scored in double digits in all but four games in the bubble so far, notching huge efforts of 31 points against Houston and 25 against the Clippers.

Burke is still lightning fast and can seemingly get to the rim at will, something he has done regularly against the Clippers who have the best perimeter defense in the NBA.

Burke has also been knocking them down from long-range, though most of his damage has come off dribble penetration, where he either got to the hoop and finished or set up a teammate.

He is only 6-foot tall, which has always been the knock on him, but Burke seems to have finally figured out how to use his body to keep shot blockers away and use his quickness as a weapon.

The New Orleans Pelicans are going to need a backup point guard whether they keep Frank Jackson or not, and if they could grab Burke for the league minimum, he could be a lightning in a bottle type scorer for them the way he has been for Dallas in the playoffs.

The Pelicans’ second unit struggled to score at times and we’ve seen Burke take over games on the biggest stage, so he could be a much more consistent option off the Pels’ bench.

None of these three free agents are going to be the final piece of a championship puzzle, but they all offer something the Pelicans need and should be within their price range.

The Pelicans will need more low-cost production off their bench if they want to join the elite of the Western Conference.
