Ranking the NBA Coaching Vacancies: Chicago Bulls
No. 5: Chicago Bulls
Team and Talent
The Bulls have a few guys with talent, but no superstars. Zach LaVine is probably their best player, but he’s a shoot first guard who doesn’t have a great all-around game, though he is improving. It’s possible he’ll be a multiple time All-Star, but other than him, there might not be another one on the roster.
LaVine, Otto Porter Jr., Thaddeus Young and Tomas Satoransky are all making too much money, while Coby White and Lauri Markkanen are good value contracts. The Bulls’ cupboard isn’t bare, but they finished 11th in the East and need huge improvements.
Ownership and Front Office
The Reinsdorfs are what they are. They’ve owned the team forever and are known as affable bosses who don’t spend a ton of money. They finally modernized their front office with the hire of Arturas Karnisovas, who was a great choice.
This hire is the biggest thing going for the Bulls, as Reinsdorf doesn’t have the best reputation while Karnisovas is credited for being one of the masterminds behind the Nuggets’ success.
They finally moved on from the Gar/Pax era and I personally know several Bulls’ fans who were dancing in the streets. John Paxson still has a front office role, so his influence is not gone completely, which was a big mistake on the part of the Bulls and one that could cause problems down the road.
The City
Chicago is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has everything culturally, great food etc… BUT, it is not a basketball town, sorry. The Chicago fans disappeared after Michael Jordan left and they haven’t come back. The Bears and Cubs still rule the city and it will take a sustained run of success to bring back the fickle basketball fans.
The Verdict
The Bulls may have a new and improved front office, but the owners are the same, the team stinks and the city doesn’t really care at the moment.
