New Orleans Pelicans: Updated Head Coach Candidate Rankings
By Nick Alvarez
New Orleans Pelicans Coaching Candidate #6- Jerry Stackhouse, Vanderbilt
Jerry Stackhouse has also slipped a spot from our last ranking and that’s due to how we believe the New Orleans Pelicans’ coaching search will play out and some on the other opportunities available.
In Stackhouse though, we have an NCAA head coach whose candidacy is built on his last few seasons as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies.
Jerry Stackhouse has made a reputation in player development for his stint with the Toronto Raptors where he developed some of the team’s biggest championship contributors when he was coaching the team’s G-League affiliate.
A coach who’s a former player as well, Jerry Stackhouse could be the best player development specialist on this list and that could earn him serious consideration if he opts to leave Vanderbilt after only one season.
New Orleans Pelicans Coaching Candidate #5- Becky Hammon, San Antonio Spurs (Assistant)
Becky Hammon falls out of our top three because it doesn’t seem like she’ll be leaving the San Antonio Spurs organization. In all likelihood, she will be Gregg Popovich’s successor when he decides to retire.
It would be great if the New Orleans Pelicans could steal her before that happens though. Hammon shows great intuition from the sidelines and can be a vocal leader and teacher for this young roster as well.
Hammon brings so many desirable traits to the head coaching opening so I wouldn’t mind if the Pelicans front office and governor Gale Benson opened up their wallets to try and lure her away.
