New Orleans Pelicans: Will Weaver would be a cutting edge choice.

Will Weaver’s Credentials

There has been a trend of successful coaches working their way up through a team’s system. Miami has been the pioneer of this, promoting Erik Spoelstra from video intern all the way up to head coach.

They’ve got another guy in Dan Craig who very well could follow the same path. It’s a smart move that ensures your coach has already bought in on the team philosophy and shares the team’s vision.

Though Weaver has not worked for the Pelicans directly, he has worked his way up through the ranks and Trajan Langdon is very familiar with his coaching philosophy.

Weaver has been impressive everywhere he’s been and has the backing of some of the game’s best minds.

Weaver’s coaching career started when he was still an undergrad at the University of Texas, where he was eventually a graduate assistant. He then went on to be the assistant coach at Sam Houston State, where he first met Sam Hinkie.

One of Hinkie’s first acts in Philly was to hire Weaver as an assistant coach, in fact, he hired Weaver even before head coach Brett Brown. After helping to rebuild the Sixers, Weaver was hired as a special assistant to Kenny Atkinson and charged with improving their player development program.

He was the Long Island Nets’ head coach in 2018-19, winning G-League Coach of the Year and getting a lot of credit for the improvement of Brooklyn’s young players.

Weaver is currently the coach of the NBL’s Sydney Kings, who he took to their first finals in more than ten years, coaching future Pels’ player Didi Louzada.

Louzada only played 20 games with the Kings, but already showed marked improvement across the board.

Could Weaver be the guy to take the Pels to the next level?
