How David Griffin Will Use First-Round Picks with the New Orleans Pelicans

I think David Griffin is going to bring the same calculated approach he used in Cleveland to the New Orleans Pelicans. I believe that David Griffin is using the 2020 NBA in tandem with his moves in the 2019 NBA Draft to solidify the core he wants to build around in the bayou.

So far, Griffin has two franchise stars in Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson along with young players Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Jaxson Hayes, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. With the 13th pick in this year’s draft, he can finish solidifying that core with another elite talent.

When that happens, the New Orleans Pelicans will be open for business. I think David Griffin is planning on using future draft picks and a few of the younger players to swing a big move.

It’s realistic to expect that at first, Griffin will look for a move like the one he made for Kevin Love. He’ll swing some young talent and draft picks to get an elite guard and build a big-three similar to the one in Cleveland that has an All-Star at the guard, wing, and big positions.

After that, the New Orleans Pelicans championship window will open so fans can expect David Griffin to move picks for the remaining pieces needed for a title run. This the formula he uses at every location during his career, and I think David Griffin is bringing it to New Orleans.
