New Orleans Pelicans Draft: 3 Sleepers the Pels Should Consider
New Orleans Pelicans Sleeper Prospects: Malachi Flynn
Malachi Flynn: Point Guard, San Diego State
Flynn’s combination of age (22) and size (6-foot-1) have kept him off most people’s big boards, but he could end up being a steal.
He is a smart offensive player who makes the right pass, can run the offense and shoot the ball. Flynn was a 37.3% shooter from long range in his junior season on 6.4 attempts per game.
Flynn is not lighting fast, but uses change-of-pace to keep defenders off balance and has an array of floaters and pull-up shots. He operates well out of the pick-and-roll and can either get into the lane or set up teammates.
He projects as a back up point guard who could run the offense, knock down open three’s and most importantly, one who takes care of the ball.
Flynn had 5.1/1.8 assist to turnover ratio, which would work well on a Pelicans’ team that had trouble taking care of the ball. He’s also a pesky on-the-ball defender who can cause problems even though he doesn’t have a lot of size.
Flynn is another guy who could be available when the Pelicans pick in the second round, and would be an interesting risk as a potential replacement for Frank Jackson.
The New Orleans Pelicans are in a position to find sleeper talent in the draft but it’s all on David Griffin and Trajan Langdon to sniff it out.
