Chris Paul’s enormous contract is the first reason why trading for him is a very bad idea

Let’s get the most obvious point out of the way, I don’t think anyone in the league wants to take on Chris Paul’s contract. At 35 years old, Paul is making 85 million dollars over the next two seasons, which is insane.

Paul’s contract situation loops into how the New Orleans Pelicans structure their finances in the future. To trade for Chris Paul and re-sign Brandon Ingram while having cap space to extend Zion Williamson, the Pelican would have to move on from Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday.

That’s an insane move because Lonzo Ball is one of the best up-and-coming point guards in the NBA with a lot of untapped potentials. One the other hand, Jrue Holiday for all his problems fitting with the Pelicans is younger and more valuable. We recently covered how trading Holiday can snowball into a massive return.

Moving on from those two players for a future Hall-of-Famer one a large contract nearing the end of his career is something an inept franchise like the New York Knicks does.

Cap flexibility with a young roster is a big reason why teams grow to become competitive and adding Chris Paul to the Pelicans ruins that advantage.
